Jui Jitsu
Jiu-Jitsu, Jiujitsu, jujitsu, or juijitsu are
all the same system of martial arts. There are many styles of juijitsu, from
American, to Japanese, and South American,
but the original system seems to have came from the early Japanese culture.
Some say juijitsu is a Combat martial Art
developed by the Bushi of Japan. The samurai clans in Japan adopted Jiu-Jitsu
as their own traditional style to defeat an opponent regardless if the
situation was striking, throwing or grappling.
Others state the History of Jiujitsu evolved
over 2500 years ago, and its roots lay
in the combination of many teachings that either originated in Japan or were
brought to Japan from neighboring countries
Jiu-Jitsu could be considered one of the most
important Japanese Martial Art because of the Martial Ways of Aikido, Judo,
Hapkido, Nippon Shorinji Kempo and some systems of karate are said to all have
their roots in Jiu-Jitsu.
Many think of juijitsu as a grappling art but
it is much more than this. While stressing unarmed techniques, the use of small
weapons was an important part of its structure. Striking techniques are always
an important part of Jiu-Jitsu , throwing techniques, joint locking techniques
strangulation techniques and the use of weapons encompassed the whole combat
spectrum, making Jiu-Jitsu a very effective Martial Art.
The first
known recorded juijitsu competition was on a beach at izumo, in Shimane
Prefecture, in the year 23 B.C., Nomi-no-Sukune killed his opponent
Tajima-no-Keyaya, and approximately around 880 AD, the first recorded
juijitsu school was opened, a Diato-Ryu Aiki Jiujitsu school was formed by
Prince Teijun. Jiu-Jitsu was more than likely the first Japanese martial art
to be introduced in the West.
The
most obvious aspect of Jiu-Jitsu is that it is not reliant on strength. Rather,
it relies on balance, speed and leverage. It is because these factors are so
important, that Jiu-Jitsu tends to be an effective system regardless of the
opponents size. Making it open equally to men, women, strong, or weak
individuals.
